Instructor Positions
The Before-Care instructors run our before-camp care program. They are responsible for camper check-in and preparing and running activities with campers before their camps begin.
The After-Care instructors run our after-camp care program. They are responsible for camper sign-out and preparing and running activities with campers after their camp ends.
The Lunch Instructor team is responsible for set-up and take-down of the lunch site. This entails setting up the venue, organizing provided lunches for the applicable campers, and cleaning up at the end of the lunch period. The Lunch team leads campers in games and activities during the lunch period.
Quantum Computing Curriculum Developer:
Help educate the next generation of scientists and engineers! Curriculum Developers create engaging and exciting activities for students to learn about the fascinating field of quantum computing. This role focuses on bringing cutting edge technologies to youth province-wide through hands-on activities.
InSTEM Internship Positions
The InSTEM Internship is designed to provide Indigenous youth with the knowledge and experience to teach about STEM topics, and develop career oriented professional skills. Indigenous Outreach Interns will be equipped with the skills to build, review and teach STEM curriculum in a safe and inclusive manner under the mentorship of an Outreach Team member. The mentor will guide the student on how to be an effective STEM educator, provide insight on the specific steps needed to pursue STEM careers, and will also work with Outreach Interns to develop a set of personal and professional development goals. Progress on these goals will be evaluated on a weekly basis throughout the placement.
Student Assistant Positions
Chemical Safety Student Assistant:
The Chemical Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety of all participants and staff during the planning, preparation and execution of science experiments and activities. The CSO will be responsible for ordering and organizing our hazardous chemicals and materials, training staff on chemical safety, and approving activities instructors want to run that involve hazardous chemicals and materials. This position is excellent training for those interested in developing laboratory management or chemical safety skills.
The After Care Student Assistant will be responsible for overseeing the after-camp care program. The After Care program involves overseeing camper sign-out and providing campers with fun, engaging activities during the program. The ACSA will supervise and support the After Care instructors during the program and lead the planning of activities for this program.
The InSTEM Student Assistant supports Geering Up’s programming to reach underrepresented groups in STEM fields with a specific focus on Indigenous communities, rural areas, and at-risk youth. This position involves organizing camps and workshops and building and maintaining strong relationships with our community partners.
Communications Team Positions
The Graphics Content Creator helps to oversee Geering Up’s graphic design, media releases, and public relations. They design engaging graphics and logos to attract participants, staff members, and volunteers to the Geering Up programs and help maintain branding consistency for Geering Up.
The Social Media Content Creator oversees the management of Geering Up’s social media account. Through engaging posts, videos, and media releases, they make sure that Geering Up has a strong social media presence to get our programs out to as many people as possible.
The Visual Content Creator is responsible for photography and videography that aligns with Geering Up branding and visual strategy. They create content that represents and highlights Geering Up’s programs.

During the process of filling out the application form, you will be asked for a brief summary of your relevant work/volunteer experience and a PDF of your resume. Instructor applicants will be asked to attach a YouTube video link (more info in FAQ’s below). Applicants to full-time positions will also be asked to submit a cover letter. - Fill out the Application Form

FAQs
Geering Up is a non-profit organization that exists to bring STEM programming to youth across BC regardless of their background. To achieve this Geering Up does four things: workshops in elementary schools, camps at UBC, after-school clubs at UBC, and outreach in communities outside of Vancouver. Our instructor team plans and delivers this fantastic content.
As an engineering and science outreach organization, we do give preference to students with an engineering or science background. However, for our instructing positions, we consider other applicants who have strong experience working with children or are pursuing a career in education. For our non-teaching positions, we consider all applicants who have work experience in similar roles.
We want to see you in action! Our Instructor application will ask for you to attach a video. We ask that you film a quick video (no editing necessary) of you teaching anything within the STEM fields as if it were to a class of kids.
Please keep it short (under 2 minutes) and upload the video to YouTube, as we will ask for a YouTube link. Returning staff are exempt from this.
Yes!! However, please be advised that several of our positions work with young children. If you are an international student on a work permit, a completed medical exam is required prior to your start date for these positions. Please refer to the Government of Canada website or contact your local visa office for additional information.
Yes! Anyone who joins us for camps season (June 15th start) can take classes during Term 1 of the summer. We will excuse you from work for any classes and finals you have in the last couple weeks of June. Lots of Instructors prefer a June start so that they can take some summer classes. If you plan on taking Summer Term 2 courses, then you would have to take a part-time position with us during camps season.
Given these uncertain times, we may choose to not hire some of the above roles. However, we feel optimistic that all these positions will be funded and set in stone within the next month. We encourage everyone to apply! We will connect with applicants who applied for roles which we have had to alter or drop to see if they are interested in other available positions.
Student Assistants are the title we give to our staff who help out with our administration team. They often directly oversee a project, which could include supervising a group of Instructors.
